Lesson note
Puerto Rico's political status: In 1952 Puerto Rico adopted its current constitution and Commonwealth government (Estado Libre Asociado), and Puerto Ricans have held U.S. citizenship since 1917. What that status means, and whether Puerto Rico should remain a commonwealth, become a state, or pursue independence, is still debated among Puerto Ricans themselves, without one universally agreed-on answer.
